Hope DeBates was raised on a farm in Moody County, South Dakota. At age twenty she moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. Aside from fronting her band North Forty, Hope has worked as a back-up and lead singer with a variety of artists, including Cecil Taylor, Gordon Gano (Violent Femmes), and Amy Helm (Ollabelle)., among many others.

 

Hope DeBates and North Forty perform a diverse range of music, from classic to alt style country originals, and 70's/80's pop covers; all done with a unique and creative approach. 

The members of North Forty are a rotating cast of some of the finest musicians in NYC. Many of them have backed some of the biggest names in music including, Bob Dylan, Norah Jones, Rod Stewart, Rosanne Cash, Marshall Crenshaw, Casandra Wilson, Greg Allman, and Bill Frisell.
